Day 1 Recap
With over 100,000 fans on hand and the most of media hidden away behind the stage, the 2017 NFL Draft got underway on Thursday. A big run on offensive players early led to some prime talent falling into the teens and 20s. Desperation for QBs caused some ugly trades. And it seemed as though diluted drug tests and pending charges don't really hurt Draft stock too much. Here is an overall recap of Day 1 and a look ahead to round 2.
1. Cleveland Browns - Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
After the ultimate smokescreen convincing even Kizer and McShay they were taking Trubisky (I blame Schefter), the Browns instead settled for the best player available in Garrett
2. TRADE Chicago Bears - Mitchell Trubisky, QB, UNC
What are the Bears thinking?! They gave up a king's ransom to move up 1 spot for a talented yet unproven starter after signing Mike Glennon in the offseason. And it looks like they easily could have had Kizer instead in the 2nd. Smh
3. San Francisco 49ers - Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford
The best part of this pick is the trade down. Thomas is only an ok fit on that DL that already features 2 other interior pass rushers but they will find a way to make it work.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars - Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
The Jags grab their workhorse back. No surprise.
5. Tennessee Titans - Corey Davis, WR, Western Kentucky
The Titans tried desperately to trade out of this pick but instead took a WR who is hurt. I like Davis but when you consider they could have had Marshon Lattimore and OJ Howard at 5 and 18 instead, it hurts their grade.
6. New York Jets - Jamal Adams, S, LSU
The Jets got luckier than they could have hoped gettting a sheriff for their secondary in Adams.
7. Los Angeles Chargers - Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
With so many other defensive options on the board, the Williams pick is a head scratcher. Paired with Keenan Allen he will provide some big targets for Rivers, but they could have had Allen or Hooker for the D.
8. Carolina Panthers - Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
Again, not a big surprise as the Panthers get a backfield weapon for Cam.
9. Cincinnati Bengals - John Ross, WR, Washington
Speed paired with AJ Green is good, but the 3rd WR off the board by 9 is a shock.
10. TRADE Kansas City - Patrick Mahomes II, QB, Texas Tech
The Chiefs wanted a future QB behind Alex Smith but paid a big sum to trade up with Buffalo to get Mahomes.
11. New Orleans Saints - Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
Now the run of teams saying "Wow he's still here?" begins as the Saints get the best CB in the draft at pick 11.
12. TRADE Houston Texans - Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
Desperation is a stinky cologne and the Texans doused themselves like a New Jersey mobster. Houston has given the Browns their 2018 1st and 2nd round picks to Cleveland to get rid of Osweiler and get Watson.
13. Arizona Cardinals - Haason Reddick, LB, Temple
The Cards resist the temptation of a QB and instead get a dynamic LB for their defense.
14. Philadelphia Eagles - Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
The Eagles made the crowd happy adding a big time DE for that DL.
15. Indianapolis Colts - Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State
Great pick here as the Colts get a Top 10 talent at 15 due to injury concerns.
16. Baltimore Ravens - Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama
The Ravens needed a corner and went back to their Bama well getting Humphrey.
17. Washington Redskins - Jonathan Allen, DT, Alabama
Top 5 talent at pick 17. Maybe best single pick of the night.
18. Tennessee Titans - Adoree Jackson, CB, USC
The fastest made pick of the night broke the Cowboys heart as Tennessee takes the versatile KR/CB from Southern Cal
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - OJ Howard, TE, Alabama
Tampa grabbed the sliding talent of Howard and give Jameis a nice security blanket to add to Evans and D Jax.
20. Denver Broncos - Garrett Bolles, OT, Utah
The Broncos took a desperately needed LT in Bolles
21. Detroit Lions - Jarrad Davis, LB, Florida.
Surprised the Lions opted for Davis over Foster.
22. Miami Dolphins - Charles Harris, DE, Mizzou
Like their AFC East bunk mates, the Jets, the Dolphins got extremely lucky with Harris sliding into their lap.
23. New York Giants - Evan Engram, TE, Ole Miss
Odd that NY would take Engram over Njoku but he's still another dynamic weapon. But they still need an OT and a RB
24. Oakland Raiders - Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State
Perfect Raiders pick after they did their due diligence. Hopefully
25. Cleveland Browns - Jabril Peppers, S, Michigan
The Browns get another defensive starter at SS in Peppers.
26. TRADE Atlanta Falcons - Takkarist McKinley, OLB, UCLA
The Falcons outbid the Cowboys to get Takk McKinley as a pass rusher opposite Beasley.
27. Buffalo Bills - Tre'Davious White, CB, LSU
This pick puzzled me as the McDermott scheme doesn't value corners as high and White is more of a man cover than their zone scheme. Especially with Foster still on the board.
28. Dallas Cowboys - Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan
This was not Dallas's first choice or mine. Taco seems redundant with David Irving, Tyrone Crawford and Malik Collins as a hybrid RDE/3 Tech.
29. TRADE Cleveland Browns - David Njoku, TE, Miami
The Browns jump back into Round 1 to get the dynamic TE ahead of Pittsburgh.
30. Pittsburgh Steelers - TJ Watt, OLB, Wisconsin
Pitt adds a bookend strong side OLB to pair with Bud Dupree. Solid pick.
31. TRADE San Francisco 49ers - Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
Niners trade back in to get a Top 5 player on their board at 31. Nicely done by rookie GM.
32. New Orleans - Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin
Not impressed with this pick very much. Saints do nothing from their DL in round 1 and instead add a RT after drafting a bust OT in Peat a couple of years ago.
What to Watch on Day 2:
- Troubled runners Mixon and Cook off the board in first 10 picks of 2nd round
- Fight for OL between Lamp, Robinson and Moton in early first
- Watch for run of safeties in mid 2nd

TE: Adam Shaheen, Ashland
OT: Taylor Moton, Western Kentucky
OG: Dion Dawkins, Temple
OC: Ethan Pocic, LSU

DT: Dalvin Tomlinson, Alabama
