Mock Draft 1.0

Now that the season is finally concluded with the Seattle Seahawks crowned as the champs, the final draft order is set. Well, almost. The Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens finished with identical records and will flip a coin at the Scouting Combine on February 20^th to determine who has pick 16 and 17. Though it may be trivial, the Cowboys may wish to lose the toss as pick #17 has proven fairly “lucky” in the past, producing Emmitt Smith, Mel Renfro, Kevin Smith and Kevin Brooks the four times they picked 17^th. With that in mind, here is my first mock draft of the season. So much is likely to change between now and May 8^th with free agency and trades still to go, but this is a good way to look at team needs and prospects as they stand going into the Combine in an entertaining way.

 

Round 1

1.     Houston Texans: Blake Bortles, QB, Central Florida

If the Texans had their choice, I think they’d prefer to take Clowney with the first pick. However, the need for a QB is too strong to ignore or wait. I expect an impressive showing at the Combine will propel l Bortles to the top of the QB class and thus down to Houston

Team Needs: QB, OT, DE/OLB, S

2.     St Louis Rams (from Washington): Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn

I really think Jake Matthews is the better OT prospect, but the Rams will likely fall in love with Robinson’s size and run blocking. Just like last season when Eric Fisher leapt over Luke Joeckel in the evaluation process, Robinson, with a nice Combine, could do the same thing.

Team Needs: OT, S, WR, G

3.     Jacksonville Jaguars: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina

The Jaguars, despite a desperate need for a signal caller, will be thrilled to get the best player in this draft with the #3 pick. If the Jags can keep Clowney motivated, he could transform the Two-toned Helmets on defense next season.

Team Needs: QB, DE, C, RB

4.     Cleveland Browns: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M

Despite the uproar in the front office, the Browns are still likely to stick to the plan of drafting Johnny Football. New GM Ray Farmer might attempt to trade up, especially if Bortles gets by the Texans, but will likely stay and take a guy that can bring some positive attention to this woeful franchise.

Team Needs: QB, RB, G, WR

5.     Oakland Raiders: Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson

Like the Jaguars, the Raiders take the best player available despite a big need at QB. Whether they draft one later or sign a veteran, any Raiders QB will be thrilled to have Watkins lined up out wide.

Team Needs: QB, WR, DE, G

6.     Atlanta Falcons: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M

While the Falcons might be very tempted to draft a pass rusher like Khalil Mack, their biggest need really is on their O-line and having Matthews fall to them is fantastic. The Falcons learned last year low going cheap up front can cost you an entire season.

Team Needs: OT, DE, TE, DT

7.     Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Khalil Mack, DE, Buffalo

New HC Lovie Smith will need to put some teeth in that defense and adding Mack will do just that. With great versatility, Mack can move all over the defense and get pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Team Needs: DE, TE, OT, LB

8.     Minnesota Vikings: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville

New OC Norv Turner has already indicated the Vikings will be looking for a QB and having Bridgewater fall to them is a dream. Bridgewater is the most polished and NFL-ready QB in this class, but concerns about his slight frame and lack of “wow” factor will likely have him slip a little.

Team Needs: QB, DE, LB, G

9.     Buffalo Bills: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina

One of the things I love about the Bills organization is they almost always tip their hand as to their draft pick. However, since so few major media outlets pay attention to Buffalo it often gets missed. The Bills have mentioned several times finding a reliable target for young EJ Manual and Ebron looks like he might be a star.

Team Needs: TE, G, LB, S

10.                         Detroit Lions: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State

Most Big Boards right now have Dennard over Gilbert in the CB rankings. However, I think Gilbert will have better measurables (namely 40 time) and might leap into the Top 10. Though the Lions also really want a WR to pair with Megatron, the WR crop in this draft is very deep and can be filled in round 2.

Team Needs: CB, WR, S, OL

11.                         Tennessee Titans: Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA

Barr was once thought to be a top 5 pick. But once scouts started carving up tape, issues with inexperience, technique and size all started Barr down the board. However, with the Titans converting to a 3-4 Barr will make a great pass-rushing OLB.

Team Needs: OLB, RB, OT, S

12.                         New York Giants: Zach Martin, OT, Notre Dame

The Giants just love versatile offensive linemen and Martin fits that bill perfectly. Though his build might fit better as a guard in the pros, Martin showed enough agility and anchor to hold his own at LT at the Senior Bowl. Wherever he plays, Martin will be a nice addition to the Giants offensive line.

Team Needs: OT, DE, LB, CB

13.                         St Louis Rams: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama

With two picks in the top half of the 1^st round, the Rams can address both of their top needs without reaching. Clinton-Dix is a playmaking safety that the Rams secondary has lacked for some time.

Team Needs: OT, S, WR, G

14.                         Chicago Bears: Tim Jernigan, DT, Florida State

The Bears defensive line got decimated with injuries last year. And now with their top DTs facing free agency, Chicago has a huge need up front of defense. Jernigan fits perfectly as a 3 technique in the Bears D.

Team Needs: DT, S, CB, C

15.                         Pittsburgh Steelers: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State

Ike Taylor really struggled last year and the Steelers could find a clone of him in Dennard. A tough, physical corner accustomed to being on an island, Dennard might have a little Richard Sherman in him.

Team Needs: CB, OT, S, WR

16.                         Baltimore Ravens: Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M

The Ravens and Joe Flacco really missed Anquan Bolding last year. Evans, a big 6’5” receiver with a tendency to bail out his QB, is exactly what this offense needs. However, if Evans runs a blazing 40 time he might not still be available by pick 16 or 17.

Team Needs: WR, OT, C, S

17.                         Dallas Cowboys: Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh

As we saw in the Superbowl, the key to the Tamp-2 defense is getting pressure on the QB without mush blitzing. Donald, though a little undersized, should be an instant starter at the 3 technique and fill the void left by free agent Jason Hatcher.

Team Needs: DT, S, LB, DE

18.                         New York Jets: Marqise Lee, WR, USC

The Jets will be looking for any offensive weapon they can find to help young QB Geno Smith. Lee is a vertical threat and a great route runner that instantly become the best WR on the Jets roster.

Team Needs: WR, TE, S, G

19.                         Miami Dolphins: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama

The Dolphins need to completely revamp their offensive line at every position but center. Though Kouandjio may not be the best tackle prospect available, some red flags circling around other tackle prospects might have them go a different direction given the events of last season.

Team Needs: OT, G, DT, RB

20.                         Arizona Cardinals: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State

The Cardinals would have to be thrilled to find a QB at #20. Carr could be the target of teams that passed on QBs early to trade up and snag so the Cards will have to be vigilant to land him. With Carson Palmer nearing the end of his career, this would be a great situation for Carr to learn a season and not get thrown into the fire as his brother did.

Team Needs: OT, OLB, S, QB

21.                         Green Bay Packers: Louis Nix III, NT, Notre Dame

BJ Raji is a free agent and might be better suited to play DE if he is retained. Nix can be a force in both run stopping and pass rushing. Though the Packers might have bigger needs in other areas, their front office is usually pretty good about taking the best player available.

Team Needs: S, OLB, DL, TE

22.                         Philadelphia Eagles: Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville

The Eagles don’t want to go into this draft needing a safety because it is very likely Pryor will be gone before they pick with a good day at the Combine. Pryor is quickly rising up draft boards around the league due to his play-making and awareness.

Team Needs: CB, S, OLB, WR

23.                         Kansas City Chiefs: Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State

This is another pick that I don’t really agree with but could see happening. Benjamin’s size and speed combination will have GMs around the league salivating. I’m not convinced about his route running or hands, but a really good Combine could change my mind.

Team Needs: WR, TE, DB, OL

24.                         Cincinnati Bengals: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida

This might be the first pick considered a “reach” by some. I like Roberson as the next best CB available over Verrett due to his size and ballhawking skills. The Bengals must greatly upgrade their secondary to make more of a playoff run.

Team Needs: CB, OT, DE, S

25.                         San Diego Chargers: Dee Ford, OLB, Auburn

The Dwight Freeney signing did not work out for the Bolts and they need a real upgrade on the pass rush. Ford shined at the Senior Bowl and has tremendous burst off the edge.

Team Needs: CB, OLB, TE, OL

26.                         Cleveland Browns (from Indianapolis): David Yankey, G, Stanford

The other big needs for the Browns are all at positions of strength in this draft and could be filled in later rounds. Yankey is another outstanding guard from the linemen factory that is Stanford. The Browns use the pick they got for Trent Richardson to improve the blocking for a different RB.

Team Needs: QB, RB, G, WR

27.                         New Orleans Saints: Kony Ealy, DE/OLB, Mizzou

Ealy could be a great fit for the Rob Ryan defense due to his flexibility of position. Though he played DE at Mizzou, some scouts think Ealy has the frame to add some weight and play DE in a 3-4 too. Wherever Ryan plays him, Ealy should thrive in New Orleans.

Team Needs: OLB, OT, ILB, S

28.                         Carolina Panthers: Odell Beckham Jr, WR, LSU

The Panthers have a number of big needs going into this offseason but getting more weapons for Cam must be near the top of that list. I have Beckham Jr as the 4^th rated WR in this draft with his explosive playmaking ability.

Team Needs: WR, CB, OT, LB

29.                         New England Patriots: Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech

Tom Brady would be thrilled to have Amaro to throw to next season. With the ability to play TE or WR, Amaro will fill the void left by Aaron Hernandez last year and get that Patriots offense back on track.

Team Needs: C/G, TE, DT, WR

30.                         San Francisco 49ers: RaShede Hageman, DE/DT, Minnesota

The Niners would love one of the top WRs or CBs to fall to this spot but that is pretty unlikely. I expect them to field offers for trades here too. But if they stand pat, Hageman would be yet another beast to add to that scary front 7, likely becoming a DE in their 3-4.

Team Needs: WR, CB, DE, C

31.                         Denver Broncos: CJ Mosley, ILB, Alabama

 

While Mosley is often rated much higher on many experts’ big boards, positions like inside linebackers often slip. The Broncos would love to plug Mosley into their defense next season despite needs at CB and S.

 

Team Needs: CB, ILB, DE, WR

 

32.                         Seattle Seahawks: Xavier Su’a-Filo, G, UCLA

The Champs don’t have a lot of holes to fill, but an upgrade at guard could help their running game. Su’a-Filo is my top rated pure guard in this draft and should be a ten year starter in this league.

Well then, it’s time for the big show: the Denver Broncos versus the Seattle Seahawks. If these two teams were playing on Sunday Night Football back in October, I would have used the opportunity to clean out the garage. It’s difficult for me to decide who to root for in this one. The Broncos, led by “Papa” John Schnatter’s boyfriend, Peyton Manning, have been a scoring machine all year long with a mediocre defense. The Seahawks, led by some guy from last year’s draft, have had a stout defense all year, but a decidedly anemic offense. This game encapsulates the perfect mix that the executives at NFL headquarters would have planned – you know, if they were influencing the outcomes of games. Of course, why would they do that when the only thing to gain would be hundreds of millions of dollars? I’m sure all of the games are fair. 

 

 

" Wait, who is supposed to win this game again?"

 

 

All year long we have been subjected to homoerotic pizza commercials featuring John and Peyton in a variety of uncomfortable settings, playing grab-ass and hamming it up for the camera. These two miscreants have invaded our living rooms all year long acting like jackasses in order to gratify their egos and sell us their lousy pizzas. Ever eat one of these things? Imagine going into an abandoned mobile home and cutting a round section of carpet out of the bathroom floor, then having two homeless people take turns throwing up on it. Take your rotten mass-produced product and shove it up your #$%^. Thanks, Papa!

 

 

The Seahawks feature a loud-mouthed scumbag named Richard Sherman who plays on the defense. If anyone’s children behaved the way he did, they would be suspended from their Pee-Wee team, and their parents would take them home and ground them. Yet despite his disgusting antics, record numbers of people will tune in to watch this creep play. I don’t get it. Apparently the nation’s moral posturing goes out the window on Sundays. Thanks for the great example, Dick Sherman.   

 

 

The Stupid Bowl will be filled with celebrities who couldn’t give a S about football, but want to buy $3,000 tickets in order to be seen at the event. This means that people who froze their ass off in Denver and Seattle all year watching their teams play in crappy weather will be priced out of the seats. Viva Capitalism! Remember, we are to always view Capitalism as perfectly flawless, or else we’re Socialist terrorists.

 

 

So enjoy the consumer-porn on Sunday. Turn the volume up during the commercials. Stock up on Bud Lite and Cialis. Enjoy the lyp-sync at half time, and remember if you get tired of the BS, you could just turn it off and go #$%^ yourself instead.

Senior Bowl Recap

The Senior Bowl is the first chance most players have to get coached and interact with teams and scouts. It’s also the last opportunity they have to show their talents before the Scouting Combine in February, so the stakes are high. Here is a list of the players who helped or hurt their causes in Mobile, AL.

Stock Up

Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh - Donald started out strong measuring in at 1/8 of an inch under 6’1” and 288 pounds which was very good to see considering he was listed at just 6’0”. Donald has been a disruptive force in opposing backfields his entire career, and he has 66 career tackles for loss, 29.5 career sacks, and six forced fumbles. He was absolutely unblockable in one on one’s this week, and he made Cyril Richardson look absolutely foolish multiple times during the week. He showed he has the strength to hold up at the point of attack, the burst to penetrate upfield, and impressive hand usage to keep blockers from engaging him in one-on-one situations. He’s the definition of an interior disruptor, and even though he will inevitably be knocked for his size he proved this week that his talent translates to the next level. Comparisons to Bengals DT Geno Atkins are being whispered.

Chris Borland, LB, Wisconsin - Borland, much like Aaron Donald, is regularly knocked for his size. However, Borland proved that he can play at the next level all week, and even flashed the ability to shed blocks at the point of attack. However, his lack of height and short arms are going to make it difficult for him to do that at the next level. Still, his instincts, burst, strength, and impressive tackling (as well as his impressive knack for forcing fumbles) will all translate to the next level. He can play inside in a 3-4 or in a 4-3.

Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State - Richburg came in as one of the top centers in the country but he is undoubtedly my #1 center now. He was one of the only interior offensive linemen who could hold up versus Aaron Donald in one on ones all week, and he even showed that he has the agility to pull which is quite rare for a center. He’s a top talent, and he’s a guy you can plug in at center from day one and expect quality play.

Zach Martin, OT, Notre Dame - Martin showed that he could play outside at tackle and inside at guard this week. He looked the part of a first round pick at both positions all week, and despite lacking “ideal” height and length for a tackle I think he will get a shot outside in the NFL. Even if he doesn’t play well at tackle he will be able to slide inside and play at a high level there.

Kyle Van Noy, OLB, BYU - I have maintained for a while that Van Noy is a quality player and while he isn’t necessarily “elite” in any one area he is very versatile. He can drop into coverage, he can play the run, and he can rush the passer. He’s a player that you can move around a defense, whether he has his hand in the dirt at defensive end, is standing up to rush the passer, dropping into the flats, or even blitzing up the middle, he can do just about anything you ask him to as a linebacker. I’m still not convinced he’s going to be a stud pass rusher in the NFL, but he can do so many things for a defense that he’s still worth a high selection.

Dee Ford, OLB, Auburn - Dee Ford was too quick off the edge for just about everyone all week, and while there were times he was taking too wide of an angle he still showed that he can get the edge against NFL caliber talent. He looks like a great fit for a 3-4 defense as an outside linebacker. He absolutely helped himself this week, even if he doesn’t have the size you want to play 4-3 defensive end.

Jon Halapio, OG, Florida - Halapio played through a torn pectoral this season and as a result there were times when his play suffered. However, he was 100% healthy this week and it really showed. He was fantastic in one on one drills and I didn’t see him get beat in those drills a single time all week. He’s more well-known for his run blocking and his nasty demeanor to finish blocks, but he really impressed me with his strength and ability to reset and recover in pass protection if he was ever beaten initially. He’s a player that likely won’t go as high as I think he deserves, but he’s a player that I think can step in and play immediately at guard.

Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois - I discussed this with a couple other draft analysts, but there’s a real possibility (especially after Aaron Colvin tore his ACL), that Jimmie Ward was not only the best safety in Mobile, but the best corner as well. He’s going to be picked early day two (if he doesn’t sneak into late round one) and his ability to play corner as well as safety at a high level is going to make him a popular commodity with NFL teams.

Keith McGill, CB, Utah – We all know the NFL is a copycat league and I expect the big CB craze ala the Seahawks secondary to be the next trend. With that in mind, McGill (6’3” 214) showed some great skill and flexibility to go along with that size that could have GMs drooling.

Justin Ellis, DT, Louisiana Tech - Having watched Justin Ellis in person for almost two full weeks I have to say I came away very impressed with him. He moves so well for a man his size and while he is raw technique wise if he can work on not playing high as often and work on his hand usage then he could be a quality starter in the NFL. He’s very quick, he can penetrate upfield, but he’s also very hard to move at the point of attack. That’s tough to find in an interior defensive linemen. He absolutely helped himself at the Shrine Game and again this week at the Senior Bowl.

Stock Down

Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson – While all of the quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl had their struggles outside of David Carr, perhaps none had more expectations than Boyd. His inaccuracy throughout the week and especially in the game most definitely dropped him out of first round consideration and could put him behind the next tier of QBs as well.

Adrian Hubbard, OLB, Alabama - Hubbard impressed me as a sophomore but he didn’t look like the same player as a junior. It was noted by multiple people that he looked stiff this week, and obviously wasn’t at his best dropping into coverage as a 4-3 linebacker. He’s going to be a 4-3 defensive end or a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL, but he hasn’t shown great edge speed and doesn’t look like he’s going to be an impact pass rusher at the next level. He didn’t have a great week, and that’s unfortunate because he could have used a boost after a less than stellar junior season.

Gabe Ikard, C, Oklahoma - Ikard got pushed around a bit at the Shrine Game, particularly by Justin Ellis, but playing at guard most of the week on the South team didn’t make his job any easier at the Senior Bowl. He’s an undersized center that isn’t at his best matched up one on one, so being forced to block defensive tackles one on one as a guard obviously wasn’t playing to his skill set. He’s a day three player who is likely only a starter in a zone blocking scheme, but he obviously didn’t boost his stock this week.

Billy Turner, OT, North Dakota State - Turner was a player I was really looking forward to seeing, but he didn’t look very good outside at tackle all week. I love his demeanor, but I think he is likely a better fit inside at guard. He is still raw and needs some coaching up, but he showed me that he struggled with speed off the edge quite a bit this week.

Marqueston Huff, S, Wyoming - Huff was played out of position consistently this week at corner but he still struggled in coverage regularly in one on ones whenever I watched him. He looks like a likely day three pick even though he wasn’t in the best position to improve his stock.

Stephen Morris, QB, Miami - Morris had a very poor senior season despite Miami’s offense being very explosive to start the season. He can be best summed up by making a couple great throws in a game, but then being wildly inconsistent with his accuracy on other throws. He’s athletic with a strong arm, but his accuracy issues are so significant that I don’t have a draftable grade on him right now. If you draft him late in the draft you are drafting him believing that you can minimize his accuracy issues, but I just don’t think that’s going to be coached out of him.

Michael Sam, DE, Missouri - I feel bad knocking Sam for his week down here since he wasn’t played at defensive end all week like he probably should have been, but he’s not very good dropping into coverage and didn’t show great speed off the edge to threaten the tackle’s outside shoulder. He didn’t look like a great pass rusher at the next level, and might be best in a rotation at defensive end in a 4-3.

Cyril Richardson, OG, Baylor - Richardson entered the week as one of my top guards in the country, but he got beaten regularly by Aaron Donald all week during practice and looked like he was carrying too much weight in the process. He still needs work on his stance, and while he has a lot of upside he needs some coaching up to get there.

Brandon Linder, OG, Miami - I was pretty surprised Linder got an invite to the Senior Bowl, but Rashede Hageman beat him soundly throughout the week and he struggled on a lot of reps during one on ones. He’s likely a day three guy, but I don’t see a quality NFL starter when I watch him.

Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State – It’s not good when scouts giggle at your weigh in at your spare tire. In Sutton’s defense, he was asked to add weight his senior year but he does not wear it well. That coupled with a fairly lackluster week in Mobile has Sutton needing to put in some major work between now and the Combine.

 

Cowboys Interviews:

It doesn’t always have too much meaning, but it is always interesting to see who the Cowboys interview at the Senior Bowl. The only 2 names I could uncover were:

Dee Ford, DE, Auburn – This is interesting as Ford does not seem to have ideal size for the 4-3. But his outstanding pass-rushing skills might make up for that.

IK Enemkpali, DE, Lousiana Tech – Enemkpali is a Texas kid from Pflugerville and had a solid college career, though not without incident. With nice size for the 4-3 (6’1 272lbs), Enemkpali could wind up with a Dallas Day invite to Valley Ranch and possibly a late round selection or as a priority FA.
